Each year Coachella becomes the epicenter of electronic dance music in the United States, once again proving that EDM continues to reign supreme. Billboard declared EDM a $6.9 billion worldwide business last year and it’s a figure that’s growing with every passing year. This year’s Coachella hosts more than 50 EDM DJs and producers playing the six main stages. With events such as Coachella and Insomniac‘s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), EDM in the USA has grown into an economic powerhouse.

With an expected 99,000 people per weekend, the global economic impact of Coachella and its sister event is expected to bring in $705 million.

Nearby EDM-centric festivals such as Nocturnal Wonderland and EDC in Las Vegas, both produced by Insomniac, also get bigger each year. EDC went from around 4,000 people in its second year in 1998, to now drawing more than 120,000 people in Las Vegas. EDC in fact released an economic impact report in 2015 saying that the festival brought in $1.7 billion to Nevada over five years.

Insomniac’s events across 14 cities between 2010-2014 generated $3.17 billion and the 2014 Hard Summer Festival generated $13 million in spending in Los Angeles County according to a report by Beacon Economics.

Once considered a niche genre in underground clubs and abandoned warehouses, EDM has become a pop-culture mainstay on the Billboard charts. Now EDM artists win Grammy Awards and fill major arenas and the immersive festival culture has fueled the rise of it. The end of Tomorroworld might have been seen by some as the demise of EDM in the USA, however, Coachella and Insomniac events prove that EDM is here to stay.
