Magic Sword is a project many of you won’t have heard of. But with Steve Angello‘s label SIZE providing them with a platform to deliver their unique sound, this may just be the first step of much bigger things to come.

Sourcing from an anonymous music producer and comic illustrator, their fusion of the power of music and comics aim to tell the story of “Magic Sword – a weapon of infinite power left to be guarded by an enigmatic character named ‘The Keeper’. With their debut album ‘Volume One’, featuring a full comic that quietly found its way onto store shelves in 2012 and as word about the project spread, copies of the debut record quickly sold out, leading to a re-release in 2015.

For 2016, Magic Sword have partnered up with Size Records for the project’s follow up material – a series of episodic EP’s, each featuring a comic that tells another chapter of The Keeper’s eternal battle. Their ‘Legend’ EP is the first of these intriguing new releases, that sometimes embody game soundtracks more than the SIZE material we’re used to.

Opening in epic fashion with “Legend of the Keeper” the atmospheric build-up leads to a pulsating beat, dramatic chords and even an electric guitar lending a cinematic feel to the track. Following shortly after on the preview is “Uprising“, featuring a similarly tension-filled intro, with a steady beat creeping in to provide the backdrop for cascades of uplifting, video game-like synths. “The Curse” rounds off the EP in a suitably memorable fashion, with long, forbidding drawn-out chords over a steady beat eventually giving way to faster drums and another evocative electric guitar.

Bold, enthralling, and confident, the style Magic Sword deliver includes sounds from the spectrum rarely produced by a synth artist. Unique in form, the influences of French touch electro, rock, and the gaming sphere perfectly slot into one of ‘The Keeper’s increasingly notorious live performances. The EP also further demonstrates SIZE’s nuturing and forward-thinking nature.

Check out the preview below for Magic Swords EP, ‘Legend’, expected for release on 29th of April.
