Carl Cox performs special Essential Mix in light of last ever year at Space Ibiza

You’d be hard pressed to find a mix show which is more iconic than Radio 1’s Essential Mix. The weekly show (presented by none other than Pete Tong) has been broadcasting for over 20 years and last Friday night listeners were treated to one of the most seminal mixes in the show’s history- Carl Cox’s from Space, Ibiza. What makes this mix so bittersweet is the fact that Space Ibiza is closing after an incredible 27 year history, and with the club goes Coxy who ends his 15 year residency in the venue.

The 54 year old British DJ is one of the most recognisable faces in dance music and has long been championing house and techno the world over for quite a number of years. After this year it looks as though things will be slowing down for the dance music legend, who in a recent interview said “It’s time for me to take a little step back and have my own time and my own life.” which is some heartbreaking news. But all good things must come to an end and indeed Carl is closing Space with a bang and this Essential Mix really did prove that.

The 2 hour mix is a masterclass in DJing and track selection as Carl blitzes through a catalogue of the latest and greatest tunes from the underground. Just a quick look at the tracklist on 1001Tracklists show a myriad of IDs as well as productions from the likes of Camelphat, Mark Knight and Jay Lumen as Carl effortlessly weaves between house and techno tracks during a pumping 2 hour session. Certainly a fitting way to mark the looming end of Space, and an absolute cracker of a mix in its own right, you’d best prepare yourself for a lesson in DJing from the one and only- Carl Cox:
