This morning, Don Diablo made his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix debut, and the result was nothing short of breathtaking. When he made the announcement earlier this week that the mix would feature over 70 tracks spanning his career, it became clear that this mix was certainly not one to be missed.
The Essential Mix begins towards the earlier part of Don Diablo’s career, featuring several tracks from 2009 including ‘I Am Not From France‘ and ‘Disco Disco Disco‘. What follows can only be described as a guided tour through Don Diablo’s distinguished career, featuring some of his earliest remixes for the likes of Justice, Labrinth and Mika. While the first part of the Essential Mix is reminiscent, it shows that some of Don Diablo’s earliest productions still have the power and energy to make a huge impact. With tracks like ‘Hooligans‘, ‘Animale‘, and ‘Make You Pop‘ making an appearance, the entire mix holds an unbelievable amount of energy throughout.
The latter half of the Essential Mix showcases Don Diablo’s more recent releases, with an abundance of massive hits featured. It is impossible to come away from this mix without appreciating the sheer volume of creative masterpieces he has produced. Revisiting some of his most loved tracks, such as ‘Starlight‘, ‘AnyTime‘, and ‘Chemicals‘, the mix takes us on a tour through Don Diablo’s impressive catalogue of releases. The mix comes to an end in truly compelling and emotional style, with some words from the man himself, before ‘The Artist Inside‘ and ‘The Only Road‘ bring the mix to an end.
“It wasn’t about success, it’s not about ego, it’s about the love for music and if you’re lucky you have success, but to have momentum, now there is something truly special” – Don Diablo
