Kendrick Lamar‘s single ‘Humble‘ received the star treatment with a special remix by Skrillex, who distorts the song into an epic, brooding version drawing on many genres.

The track begins with just Lamar’s voice, then builds into a heavy bass house drop with Lamar’s vocals distorted out of recognition before turning back into a standard hip hip track. The production is heavy on the chorus, but light on the verses, making for an interesting and brief rendition of Lamar’s original.

The single is an outright success for the rapper, earning him his first solo number one in the United States. Skrillex’ work on the track pays homage to his dubstep heyday with an emphasis on frenetic energy, but also positions it within minimalist territory, demonstrating just how eclectic the producer has become. It’s already seen support by Martin Garrix this year.

The remix’ accompanying music video is a disturbing image of Lamar’s head wrapped in a noose set ablaze, drawing upon the rapper’s performance from this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Skrillex has become a much sought-after producer, with upcoming projects including Fifth Harmony’s next album and work with Incubus.
