The biggest online electronic music retailer/portal Beatport has implemented 4 new genres over the course of 2017. A 5th genre now joins the ranks, Afro house. This additional genre comes as a reflection of the growing trends in the international house music scene.

African inspired rhythms, chanting, organic instrumentation, all these facets make the Afro house scene popular throughout clubs around the world. Leading the Afro house sound currently are producer/DJ’s such as Black Coffee, Henrik Schwarz, and German producer &ME. Paving the way for the genre comes an incredibly vast and extensive array of labels including the well known Defected Records. The recent surge in popularity and attraction to the genre has motivated Beatport to ascribe Afro house it’s own category. The upswing in activity and now distinction on Beatport is sure to grow the genre even further. Speaking to the exciting new genre edition, Beatport CEO Terry Weerasinghe stated in a press release, “The Afro House sound is now stronger than ever on dance-floors around the world”.  Especially in South Africa, the rhythm rich vibes of Afro house strike a chord with the local population and fair especially well in clubs and casual centres. With a well diversified mix of both European based Afro house producers and African based producers, the new genre addition will certainly attract more musicians to the scene.

This new category addition follows after a string of new bass genres added by Beatport in the past year, including trap/future bass, garage/bassline/grime and leftfield bass. The other genre addition in 2017 came in the form of funky/ groove/ jackin’ house added in February. Bringing new labels and leaders into the industry, Beatport intends to provide the best possible online experience for those active in the industry, both amateur and professional.
