You can love him or you can hate him, but you simply can’t take away what Tiesto has done for the landscape of dance music. From bringing trance music into the spotlight throughout the late 90s and early 00s, to being the first DJ to ever perform at the Olympics, now the Dutchman has hit another milestone.

The 47 year old has been announced as the next winner of the Edison Award, a Dutch award given only to those who truly deserve it for their longstanding contributions to the music industry. Tijs will be the first electronic artist to receive the accolade, and he well and truly deserves it too.

The judging panel had these words to say about Tiesto’s win(Roughly translated from Dutch): “‘He does not stick to a winning formula that guarantees commercial success, but looks toĀ the boundaries of the musical spectrum and challenges them throughĀ special collaborations.”

Tiesto will forever be fondly remembered by dance music fans for years and years to come, his music and legendary mixes such as his acclaimed In Search of Sunrise compilations have gone on to inspire a generation of producers and DJs and this impact is likely to outlive Tiesto himself. It’s a marvellous and beautiful thought to knowĀ that Tijs’ work will go onto inspire thousands of artists who aren’t even born yet, his works and legendary DJ sets will forever be remembered in dance music folk lore and his contributions to electronic music as a whole will last for hundreds of years to come, if not more. Many producers have come and gone from the spotlight of dance music. But Tiesto has always been on top.
