Avicii and his retirement from performing and touring caught millions of dance music fans attention last month. And while shrouded in sympathy after his heartfelt post as to why he’d taken the decision, many were still left with questions for the Swedish pioneer of cross-over dance music.

“I’m happier, more stress-free than I’ve been in a long time,”

Having performed at the Bahrain Grand Prix concert series, the Swede sat down the The Hollywood Reporter for an exclusive interview regarding his recent announcement. And while an upcoming documentary by the BBC is already in the works, hearing it from the man himself brings concrete foundations among the swirling rumors as to why.

“I was nervous when I made the announcement…mainly that I would look ungrateful. But I’ve gotten so many supportive texts from friends in the industry, other DJs, other artists. The fan response has been incredible. And even the press response has been incredible. So yeah, its been a lot better than I expected.”

Given his publicly known health scares and problems in the past few years, the worst being acute pancreatitis partly due to excessive drinking on tour, Avicii cited his health as the most important factor to his retirement as well as drawing attention to his introverted nature.

“To me it was something I had to do for my health,The scene was not for me. It was not the shows and not the music. It was always the other stuff surrounding it that never came naturally to me. All the other parts of being an artist. I’m more of an introverted person in general. It was always very hard for me. I took on board too much negative energy, I think.”

He went on to highlight that his career started well before 5 years ago, having started production at just 16.

“‘It’s been a very crazy journey. I started producing when I was 16. I started touring when I was 18. From that point on, I just jumped into 100%…When I look back on my life, I think, ‘Whoa, did I do that?’ It was the best time of my life in a sense. It came with a price — a lot of stress a lot of anxiety for me — but it was the best journey of my life.”

Also voicing his opinion that EDM still has a lot more left in it, Avcii did bring attention to his upcoming material.

“I’ll be premiering songs here and there to see what flies and what doesn’t…(the Sia track) was a demo, not the finished version…It’s one of a lot of new songs that I haven’t finally worked out yet. We’re still trying to find the right version.”

Touching on his future, Avicii fully intends to continuing working in the dance music sphere, but in a different capacity, taking more of a backseat and out of the spotlight.

“..whether that means doing other projects, songwriting for other artists, or whatever…(he may) play around a little bit and see what sticks, see what I feel I’m good at and what I enjoy. I could envision a comeback. Maybe in 60 years.”

So there’s still some distant hope for his die-hard fans. But either way, we’re happy Avicii has found solace in his career and a direction he’s passionate about. And if the tracks keep impressing, we’re not ones to complain!
