While Martin Garrix went home with a couple of MTV European Music Awards and Daft Punk one, The Chainsmokers weren’t so fortunate.

Nominated in the category for Best New Artist, The Chainsmokers lost out to Swedish songstress Zara Larsson. Highlighted by her track “Never Forget You” alongside MNEK, the young singer/song-writer also beat out the events host, Bebe Rexha, as well as DNCE and Lukas Graham.

Having experienced their best year to date, with massive collaborative hits and hundreds of millions of plays, it wasn’t meant to be for the duo. Oddly nominated consideration their breakthrough hit “#Selfie” is three years old now, it was tracks like “Closer” and “Don’t Let Me Down” that helped fuel their shortlisting.

In better news for the dance music scene, the Daft Punk produced track, “Starboy” led to The Weeknd receiving the award for Best Video. Further reflection of their hit-making abilities, and dance music’s continued presence in the mainstream, it will be interesting to see who is involved next year.

Check out the winning video below, featuring a couple of cheeky nods to Daft Punk.
