The recent situation between deadmau5 and Marshmello’s fans is currently one of the biggest stories in dance music. During the Decadence festival in Arizona this past New Year’s Eve, the Canadian artist was announced to essentially act as an opener for his more commercial counterpart Marshmello. Instead of playing his usual progressive house tracks, deadmau5 decided to play a deeper set that consisted mainly of techno music.

Deadmau5’s 75-minute performance sparked an outrage from many fans of Marshmello’s, who were surprised, or even upset, about the “boring” and “garbage” set. These attendees could not appreciate the non-mainstream genre of electronic music that was being played, which led them to bash deadmau5 on social media. For instance, an attendee reported, “I heard a number of comments like ‘his build ups take too long’ or even straight up ‘this is boring’. We waved goodbye to all the people he cleared out with a huge smile on our faces.”

Outspoken in his own right, deadmau5 immediately responded on Twitter regarding the negative reaction his techno set has received. He openly expressed his opinion regarding the lack of recognition for classical electronic music, with comments such as “you can’t [expletive] sit there and say Maceo Plex’s Solar Detroit is “weak fam”.”

Check out the thread of tweets he posted the day after his performance:
