With a proven track record of collaborations with some of pop music’s top performers, a consistent spot at the very top of the Forbes highest paid DJ List and a love life that competes with the best of them, you might imagine Scottish DJ/Producer Calvin Harris resting on his laurels, but you’d be wrong. With his recent chart topping release entitled ‘Feels’, Harris delved even deeper into what seems to be an endless bag of tricks. The release features the vocal talents of Katy Perry, Pharrell, and Big Sean. While some might say this is a drastic departure from his previous albums, ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1‘ certainly sees a return to the funkier sound produced on Harris’ debut album entitled ‘I Created Disco’, released just over a decade ago.
Following its comeback in popularity, most major releases inevitably get a release on vinyl and ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1’ is no exception. There’s one very noticeable difference, though. Harris has managed to produce the kind of album that just feels like it was made for vinyl. It’s basically all right there in the title. That’s right, ‘Funk’. the entire album has an unmistakably funky undertone. Drench that with a dab of Rap, R&B, Soul, and Disco, you’ve got a recipe for an element that’s been missing in Dance music just long enough to be presented in a fresh new package.
The album features collaborations with Ariana Grande, Young Thug, Snoop Dogg, Migos, A-Trak, Future, Khalid, and a few lesser known celebrity performances. While getting mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, ‘Feels’ remains at #21 position on Billboard’s Hot 100. Whether or not you’re a fan of what he does, it can’t be denied Calvin Harris is one of Dance music’s hardest working artists, and there’s no doubt he certainly is doing something right.
