Scottish DJ/Producer Calvin Harris is unequivocally one of the most successful and influential acts of the modern era. Much like fellow DJ Diplo, a significant portion of his success came during his EDM years. Now, Calvin is no longer conforming to the customary expectations of commercial EDM and Diplo has the insight to back it up.
In an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Diplo explained why he and Harris are earning their stripes with new sounds and how they capitalised on EDM’s rapid growth years prior.
“Me and Calvin [Harris] hijacked the term EDM when it was good for us. We might be in magazine articles [being called] the EDM guys, but we were never that. I’ve known [Calvin] for so many years and he was doing funk music, singing on records… We hijacked [the term EDM] at the moment and he refined it. He did it better than anyone else.”
When Diplo says “He did it better than anyone else”, he wasn’t kidding. Since ‘I’m Not Alone‘ in 2009, Calvin Harris has accumulated 8 UK Chart #1 singles, 2 Platinum-selling albums, 21 Platinum-selling singles, 3 Diamond-selling singles, a Grammy Award and 4 MTV Video Music Awards, just to name a few. His most successful album, ‘18 Months‘ which has sold more than 923,000 copies in the UK, reached 3x Platinum status in the UK and 2x Platinum status in Canada. In addition to this, ’18 Months’ was the first album to spawn 9 top 10 singles in the UK singles chart. Meanwhile, his latest album ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1‘ has reached silver and Gold status in the UK and Canada respectively.
