One of the most unexpected collabs this year was definitely Marshmello Bastille. More specifically, Mello teamed up with Batille’s lead singer Dan Campbell for their single ‘Happier’.  The emotional tune is based upon a breakup and despite all the challenges and tears that come with it, every ending is always a beginning of something new, even if you don’t see it in the first place. Now, Marshmello has released the official music video for Happier and it is just like the track itself: emotional.

The music video tells the story of a (teenage) girl, played by iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove, who has to wear bracelets and therefore is quite unhappy and shy. However, her rock in stormy weather is her dog, a golden retriever. The dog came as a fluffy birthday surprise when the girl was still young and from there on they grow together and become best friends. Unfortunately, as life strikes, the dog gets older and eventually has to pass away, leaving the girl in tears. The video then jumps to 20 years in the future, showing the girls’ own daughter on her birthday, unhappy with her present, which is a bow tie. However, when her daughter sees who should wear the bow tie, she is left in tears – it is a golden retriever puppy.

The video is a perfect reminder that even though it hurts to say goodbye to someone you love, life always goes on. Marshmello himself summed up the video for ‘Happier’ perfectly:

When Bastille sent me happier for the first time, I was taken aback. The amount of emotion that you could feel in the lyrics was crazy. As I listened to the song more and more, it reminded me of so many thing I’ve been through in life; toxic relationships, letting go of things I didn’t want to, and just situations where happiness came with a sacrifice. Recently, I lost my best friend, my companion, my life long friend. I wanted this video to embrace the pain that we feel losing or sacrificing something and the cycle of life that comes with it.

So, even though we all want you to be happier, prepare some handkerchiefs and check out the music video for Happier‘ now!
