It’s nearly March, which means much of the dance music industry is off to Miami to indulge in a week of networking and partying for Miami Music Week, Ultra, the Winter Music Conference, and the International Dance Music Awards, better known as the IDMAs. The IDMA nominees have now been released, and it’s a veritable smorgasbord of everything that had defined dance music over the past 12 months.

Much like any awards ceremony, there are various categories that aim to take in the full spectrum of dance music, with a few that are particularly prestigious. Up for best electronic album are the likes of DJ Koze‘s ‘Knock Knock’ and Rezz‘s ‘Certain Kind Of Magic’, while slightly confusingly there’s also a best pop/electronic album category which includes Above & Beyond‘s ‘Common Ground’ and David Guetta‘s ‘7′. Best breakthrough artist contains some well deserved nominees, though the term “breakthrough” depends highly on your take on what “breakthrough” means – Fisher‘s nomination is hardly surprising, but given Peggy Gou and Alison Wonderland have been making a mark on dance music for a few years now, it rather ties in with who had a massive track in 2018. Gou’s fantastic disco-house anthem ‘It Makes You Forget’ is up for best electronic song, rather unsurprisingly alongside Adam Beyer‘s ‘Your Mind’, Camelphat‘s ‘Panic Room’, and of course the aforementioned Fisher and his ubiquitous anthem ‘Losing It.

Elsewhere there are categories for best club, best festival, best equipment manufacturer, and a whole host of genre-specific categories. Of course, anyone with a deep interest in dance music will be sure to find glaring omissions in certain categories, but overall the huge mix of styles, sub-genres, and attention to detail when it comes to what made dance music tick in 2018 means there really is something for everyone.

For the full list of nominations, see the IDMA website, and be sure to cast your vote ahead of WMC which takes place from March 25-28.
