Popular music, and indeed electronic music, is full of songs that sound joyous and uplifting but behind the music lies a lyrical content that gives a rather different feel. Enter Swedish superstar Alesso and his latest track Sad Song, the title itself giving you all the clues you need to know this isn’t exactly a story of rainbows and unicorns, but as the main hook suggests, it’s a sad song that actually sounds happy.
From the off it’s clear this isn’t a festival banger, but you can be sure that the ‘Years‘ producer has delivered some more quality music. Alesso takes a rather understated and chilled production style that has hallmarks of pop, not least because the backbone of the track is the vocal talents of TINI, with a performance that lends the track to potential mainstream success. The radio-friendly feel of ‘Sad Song‘ shows the side of Alesso that is almost in total contrast to his loud and brash big room DJ sets, but it’s nothing new to long-term fans – he’s always been a producer who knows who to write a meaningful track in addition to his talents for knocking out a main stage anthem. TINI’s vocal skills easily put her in the same league as major pop stars, and with that in mind it’s clear that ‘Sad Song’ could easily become a massive crossover hit in the coming months.
Only time will tell of course, but in the meantime you can listen to the track in full below, and feel free to take another cue from the lyrics, by playing it on repeat.
