Cedric Gervais’ ‘Summertime Sadness’ remix turns 6 years old
It’s been 6 years since funky Frenchman Cedric Gervais blessed the world with his timeless remix of Lana Del Rey‘s multi-platinum smash-hit; ‘Summertime Sadness’. An incredible worldwide hit, the track became a staple for all the top festivals, radio shows and parties across the globe.
Nearly eclipsing the original version, Cedric’s take on the track reached unfathomable heights, achieving multi-platinum status in Australia, Canada, the U.K and the U.S, as well as peaking at #2 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The track also won a grammy the year following its release, taking out the “Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical” category. In addition to this, fellow industry heavyweights MK and Todd Terry also had the pleasure of remixing the song, however, neither reached the heights of that of Cedric’s.
Gervais had initially been rather hesitant to accept remix requests from other artists. In fact, he apparently “turned down a lot of people”, however, Lana Del Rey proved to be an exception. After consenting to assist Del Rey with the remix, Gervais said;
“it is not about the money, so I turned down a lot of people. But Lana Del Rey came in. I didn’t even ask how much money I just said please send me the vocals right away and I did the track in one day. I wasn’t thinking if it was going to be a hit or not, I just love and respect the artist that she is”
The track’s sheer success also spawned two more successful remixes; Lana Del Rey’s ‘Young & Beautiful’ as well as Miley Cyrus’ ‘Adore You’. While neither track managed to eclipse the unprecedented success generated by his ‘Summertime Sadness’ remix, ‘Young & Beautiful’ still managed to notch up platinum certifications in Australia & Italy, while the both of them also took home platinum plaques in Canada and the U.S.
