It’s almost impossible to imagine the electronic music scene right now without Sonny Moore, widely known as the legendary Skrillex, but this was once the case. Although he has been in the music scene for an extremely long time, it wasn’t always under the Skrillex moniker and he used to be a singer for the alt-rock band From First To Last from 1999 until his departure in 2007 to pursue a solo career. It wasn’t until 2009 that Moore became Skrillex, and his first offering to the world was the ‘My Name Is Skrillex’ EP, which was released as a free download on his MySpace page (the good old days). But what we’re focusing on today is the anniversary of the ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ EP which has just turned nine years old.

A true defining moment in the electronic music scene, nothing was to ever be the same again when this forever iconic EP dropped from someone who, at the time, wasn’t a massive artist at all. Released through Beatport on the Big Beat Records imprint, no one could’ve predicted just how wildly popular this completely unique EP would become and how much it would inspire future producers from all corners of the world. Moore didn’t go alone on this EP though, with artist friends PennybirdrabbitForeign Beggars and Bare Noize lending their musical talents to collaborate on tracks whilst superstars Zedd and Noisia joining Bare Noize in creating remixes for EP title track ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ and ‘Kill EVERYBODY’. It’s impressive to have so many huge names on just his second EP, but he proved early on that he can keep up with the heavyweights and thus became a heavyweight himself.

On top of this, critical reception was in Skrillex’s favour with the EP being known as a ‘commercial success’. Not only did it make its way onto the charts with gold certification, but it was nominated in the prestigious Grammy awards and even went on to win two awards (‘Best Dance Recording’ and ‘Best ‘Dance/Electronica Album). As of right now, it has reached double platinum status with over 2 million copies purchased and has a special place in millions of people’s hearts worldwide.
