Carl Cox and Mark Vessey Collaborate on Unique Vinyl Artwork

Carl Cox, renowned DJ and multi-award-winning artist, has delved into his extensive 150,000-piece vinyl collection to collaborate with UK photographic artist Mark Vessey. Together, they created a photographic artwork titled “Carl,” which authentically captures the key musical moments that define Cox’s illustrious career. Moreover, from Funk, Soul, Disco, and Rare Groove to Rave, Detroit Techno, Hip Hop, Electro, and 80s Pop, Cox’s selection reflects the diverse genres that have shaped his journey.

The artwork, a 150cm x 150cm photograph, will be displayed at Enter Gallery in Brighton on July 20th. Cox expressed the emotional process of choosing records that helped shape his career. “Each record I choose has a story behind it. Watching Mark work really makes me understand how you can look deeper into art and realize the privilege and responsibility I have when sharing my love of music with the dancefloor,” he said.

Cox’s career spans over four decades, establishing him as one of the most in-demand DJs globally. Furthermore, as a British musical ambassador, he has been a veteran of acid house, a techno champion, and a dance music pioneer. Additionally, his dedication to playing music, breaking new tunes, and celebrating life remains unwavering. Now, he distills his life’s work into a limited-edition artwork that offers a personal window into his history and his pivotal role in the dance music genre.

Pandemic Era and “Cabin Fever – The Vinyl Sessions”

During the pandemic, Cox turned his well-thumbed vinyl into “musical medicine” through his “Cabin Fever – The Vinyl Sessions” show. He broadcasted 52 episodes, sharing different genres and special tracks he wanted the world to hear. This artwork features some of those tracks, including releases by Run DMC, Carrie Lucas, Fleetwood Mac, Duran Duran, Lil Louis, and Doug Lazy.

Mark Vessey, known for celebrating icons of contemporary pop culture, captured the passion and spirit of Cox’s collection. Vessey remarked, “Working with Carl has been an honor. His passion for music is reflected in his vinyl collection, each holding a piece of his story. My hope is that this artwork visually reflects his love and shared history back to us.”

“Carl” is a limited edition of 50 prints, each accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by both Mark Vessey and Carl Cox.
