Boasting over 250 million streams for each of his tracks, as well as reaching global recognition in the most constant of manners, we could not be any more thrilled to be joined by the man of the moment as he discusses main inspirations, the origin of his style of play, the success of his two viral hits, his latest single ‘Fall At Your Feet’ alongside singer/songwriter Dean Lewis, future plans and so much more.
Hello and thank you for joining us! Could you provide us with an insight on the main inspirations/influences that led to your chosen career pathway in music?
“My inspirations are slightly weird. I came from a small town of just 125 people, and we grew up on country/old music. So someone like Johnny Cash or Elvis Presley were always huge inspirations. But in my later years, watching Fisher, Dom Dolla, or Rufus Du Sol grow into huge global acts definitely gave me hope that it’s possible to grow from Australia.”
With versatility a key aspect in the dance industry, we would like to know how your style of play came to be, as well as the key elements that make up your distinct sound?
“Growing up, I was deeply immersed in country and old music, which laidthe foundation of my musical tastes. Later in life, I discovered a passionfor house and EDM, genres that energized me in new ways. Wanting toblend these influences, I sought to create a unique sound that fused thesoulful melodies of country with the vibrant beats of electronic dancemusic, marking the beginning of my distinctive musical journey.”
Making waves with your viral hit, ‘Stumblin’ In,’ could you talk us through the main thought process behind its production, as well as your own outlook regarding the huge success it has achieved since its release?
“‘Stumblin’ In’ was an easy track to remake, as it already featured a 4/4 beat and most of the components I needed were already there. However, I see it as a culmination of the 12 years of practice it took to get myproduction to a level where my output was at a higher quality level. I never anticipated it becoming the hit it has, though!”
Amassing millions of streams, and of course garnering support from some of the biggest names in the dance scene, we would like to know the significance behind such recognition, and how it has shaped your career thus far?
“It’s honestly crazy growing up I looked up to all different musicians and DJ’s and to have artists like Tiesto now not just acknowledge my music but also share his experiences with me is something I’ll never forget. He’s a great example of someone that’s built such an amazing career I look up to.”
Releasing your very own remix of Disturbed’s ‘Sound Of Silence,’ could you talk us through the main idea behind this production, as well as your thoughts on the success it has achieved since its release?
“This might sound weird, but I really like remixing emotional songs, and Disturbed’s “Sound of Silence” gave me that feeling the first time I heard it, and even now with my own remix. When I first uploaded it, it went crazy on my socials, but never did I think it would end up being an official remix for Disturbed, which would take me to meeting them.”
Teaming up with fellow Australian singer/songwriter Dean Lewis on the release of ‘Fall At Your Feet,’ we would like to know the main inspiration behind this production, as well as the overall feel working alongside a highly-acclaimed artist that is Dean Lewis?
“Dean and I really wanted to remake a song that people wouldn’t see as obvious per se. The original is one of Dean’s all-time favorites and it’s by a band that’s comprised of Australian and New Zealand members, so we thought we’d give it a shot and it sounds amazing. Working with Dean has been really fun; we get along really well and talk everyday. I think we’re both workaholics.”
With festival season in full flow, we would like to know what the future holds for CYRIL, always in terms of new music, upcoming collaborations and live performances?
“Oh, there’s so much happening! Playing at Tomorrowland has been a dream of mine since I was 13, so to do that on July 28th is actually insane! I have an official remix for Teddy Swims coming out on July 26th, as well as my first EP ‘From Down Under’ on August 9th. That has a feature from another Australian artist, Kita Alexander, who has had heaps of success on her own records and featuring on Fisher’s ‘Atmosphere’ last year I think!”
