Home Music deadmau5 delivers new music on his ‘some ep’: Listen

Throughout his two decades of crafting his techno brand and emerging as a Main Stage staple, deadmau5 has rarely played by the industry’s rules. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that this new EP is his first solo collection of music in two years.

Since deadmau5 delivered XYZ to fans in 2022, the Canadian producer has seemingly been busier than ever, but not focused on his solo releases. Sprinkled between the occasional headline set, Joel Zimmerman has spent the last two most alongside his kx5 partner Kaskade or exploring new sounds with his protege REZZ under their moniker REZZMAU5. That drought of solo music ended earlier this year with the release of Quezacotl before fans were surprised to receive just the second single from deadmau5’s darker techno alias, TESTPILOT last week.

Both Quezacotl and the TESTPILOT single Wet appear on some ep before it is rounded out by two new singles, Sever and Input Output. As both near tracks extend to seven and 10 minutes respectively, this 4-track collection still pushed past the half-hour mark in runtime. Sever opens as an airy, futuristic soundscape that feels familiar and exciting before a driving bass and percussion infiltrate the listeners ears. While overly minimal in may ways, deadmau5 allows the track to ebb and flow, continuing to employ elements of the track at opportune moments throughout.

The EPs closing track Input Output provides the infamous bright chords and pulsing leads that elevated deadmau5 to the forefront of the music scene. For nearly 10 minutes, track embodies all of the elements and sounds of his illustrious 20-year career without feeling stale or recycled. Fans know that deadmau5 will continue to navigate his career at his pace and style, but the release of some ep is a stark reminder that he has remained commited to his craft after all these years.
