Illangelo Breaks down “I Fall Apart” by Post Malone

Illangelo is taking producers behind the scenes of his mix-down of “I Fall Apart” by Post Malone. Born Carlo Montagnese, Illangelo is a Grammy award-winning producer, songwriter, and mix engineer best known for his work with The Weeknd, Alicia Keys, and Fall Out Boy. In collaboration with Mix With The Masters, an online platform for music producers and audio engineers to learn from the best in the business and share and receive feedback from others, Illangelo dives into the project file he mixed the Diamond record in.

Mix With The Masters released a preview of what the 101-minute-long documentary has in store. Illangelo shares two vital tips in this preview; the first is relatively simple (yet effective). He encourages mix engineers not to put any effects on vocals that are not “perfect” He explains that perfection in this case isn’t defined as an impeccable take, it simply refers to a dry signal as clean as possible. He notes that by putting effects on a signal that’s not yet ready, you will amplify the “mistakes” and will only clutter your mix further.

The second tip shared in the preview is when it is time to use effects on your audio, turn the effect up as high as possible. Illangelo explains that he wants to be able to truly hear and understand what the effect is doing and dial in the best results possible. He shares it is a good idea to let the artist or other producer you are working with know that this is just temporary and that the volume will be blended back into the mix.
