Instagram is allegedly training AI models without consent
In recent claims made by an Instagram user, Meta is using your content and posts to train the AI without your consent. Is your art in danger? This article explores the full case and discusses how to maintain your privacy from these social media giants.
Artists are deleting their Instagram accounts because Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is using their posts to train the Meta AI. The social media giant recently unveiled a Meta AI chatbot and image generators that can reimagine almost anything, using images and text from public posts without permission. This means that all photos, art, and creativity are being used by the AI, and are freely available for public use. Google also uses Gmail to train an AI to complete other people’s sentences, while Microsoft uses chats with Bing to improve its AI bot’s ability to answer questions. Although users in the U.S. did not receive a notification, Meta’s data-sharing policy suggests that this is already in effect. Meta has been deploying generative AI features since September 2023, initially starting with the ability to tag the Meta AI chatbot in conversations on Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This raises the question of whether this practice is considered normal due to the actions of other tech giants. Meta executive Chris Cox stated that the company doesn’t “train on private stuff,” though these words are carefully chosen, and there are concerns about this being a serious issue. However, there are ways to prevent Instagram from using your content for their AI, and here are some of them.
- The first way to truly cut off your data from Meta is to delete your accounts. But this is not the future-proof solution, there are more ways such as
- Click on the three bars located on the right side of the app. Next, navigate to the “About” section, and then find the privacy policy. Click on the three lines, and select “Other Policies and Articles.” Choose the second option, “How does Meta use information for Meta Generative AI.” A hidden link will appear, which you need to click to access. Once you click the link, you’ll need to fill out a form. That’s it!
- And, the third one is to disable the “activity off Meta”.
