Home Tech Twitter/X Becomes Most Visited Social Media Site Overtaking Instagram and Facebook

Twitter, now called X, has become the most popular social media website. It’s now more visited than Facebook and Instagram according to SimilarWeb.

When we look at the most visited websites in the world, X is now number 3. Only Google and YouTube get more visitors. In October 2022, when Elon Musk acquired the social media giant, many felt that this would be its downfall, with him firing more than 80% of employees, including the company’s CEO. However, contrary to all claims Elon did prove himself once again with the popularity of X rising over the past year. Instagram and Facebook, both being among the world’s most-used social media platforms, held the no. 3 and 4 positions before X took over in June 2024. The reason for this might also be due to news items related to the upcoming U.S. elections. For some reason, Twitter/X is still the preferred platform for discussions related to these matters, and it’s quite convenient to get quick updates about what’s happening in the world.

Instagram did try to roll out an X competitor in the form of Threads but it’s still nowhere close to Twitter/X. Some more highlights from the SimilarWeb report highlight people spend about 4 and a half minutes on X each time they visit. They visit X more often than other social media sites, even though they might spend more time on Facebook or Instagram in one visit.

Other popular websites people visit a lot include WhatsApp for messaging, Wikipedia for information, and Reddit for discussions. Check out the complete report by SimilarWeb here.
