Home Interviews Wiwek opens up on music production, scoring a full-length movie tracklist and more: Interview

Showcasing the most versatile of natures, Wiwek is the true embodiment of hard work and dedication towards one’s craft. A naturally gifted DJ/Producer, this interview offers a wider glimpse into his career, and the various endeavours he has embarked on.

Looking to leave his own distinct mark with each of his endeavours, Wiwek is the epitome of an act that has truly mastered his craft, in more ways than none. Better know for his signature “jungle terror” sound, the Dutch DJ/Producer is no shy to venturing outside the box, and in turn, take on projects that may differ to his usual approach of music production. With this said, Wiwek perfectly illustrates his versatile nature, as well as his ability at adapting to a wide a variation of musical projects, with most recently being the production of a tracklist for a full-length movie. An achievement that arrived in accordance to his ethos and overall approach, we could not be any more thrilled to be joined by the man of the moment, as he opens up on music production and the origin of his style of play, venturing in the movie industry through various projects, scoring his very first full-length movie tracklist for the film ‘Electric Child,’ garnering recognition in both the dance scene, as well as now the movie industry, future plans and so much more.

Hello and thank you for joining us! Could you talk us through your approach towards music production, and how your style of play came to be?

“I just always try to make the music I would like to hear when I would be in a club/festival. What would really get me going. That’s basically how my style of production came to be, still is and will evolve.”

Multifaceted in every sense of the word, we would like to know how various projects have helped define your sound over the years, as well as the significance in maintaining a versatile nature?

“I keep on learning and the more I learn the more I can visualize the sounds I want to create. And when I hear/feel it in my head or body I can produce it. I think the versatility comes naturally when you keep having fun with creating and be open to what you feel instead of thinking of what the ‘market’ wants.”

First venturing in the movie industry with a short film production alongside Skrillex, could you talk us through the experience in itself, as well as the impact that it had on yourself as an artist?

“That was the first time I saw my music with cinematic visuals. You can visualize it but to actually see it and know that its all actually possible and is better then you can imagine for yourself is eye opening and definitely helped and motivated me to explore that more.”

Blessing fans alike with some heavy-hitting tracks over the years, we would like to know how the production process may differ in terms of producing music for the crowds, and then producing music used in a movie?

“For a movie and specifically this movie the sounds/ambients are in a supporting role. Its a layer of a total package while making music for the dancefloor is the total package in itself. You have to understand the vision of the director and basically enhance that.”

Scoring your very first full length movie tracklist in the form of ‘Electric Child,’ we would like to know the main thought process behind its creation, as well as the overall feel behind such a major achievement?

“The thought process already started when I red the script before I saw any images. You are trying to live in these emotions you feel and some of the ‘ samples’ I made after that where also used in the movie even though it was just quickly messing around at first. The ‘Main Theme’ was created the moment I saw the movie in its full length first time. I just played around my keyboard and it was basically done in that first initial moment. It was very intuitive and I think thats the main thought behind it all. Its very intuitive.”

Working alongside movie director Simon Jaquemet on this project, could you talk us through the production process as a whole, any challenges you may have faced, as well as the experience gained in terms of creativity and artistic expression?

“Like I said before, you have to enhance the vision of the director. This is the first movie of him I believe where he actually uses a bit of scoring and ambients in his movies. Before that it was mostly sound effects and dialogue besides licensed music. So it was alot of finding out where this time it all could actually fit. To be understanding another persons vision while still implementing my own creativity is definitely a well valued experienced gained. Something I learned alot from and can take in my luggage now.”

With the screening set to be premiered at the Locarno Music Festival in Switzerland, we would like to know how rewarding such recognition can be, as well as your own personal feelings surrounding this milestone in your career?

“Its very mind expanding to be part of this whole other scene of creativity. I am only used to dance festivals and to see this with all its people involved is beautiful to see. I felt very grateful to be part of this and to reach this milestone finally.”

A musical direction quite different to what your fans may have been used to, we would like to know your own thoughts going forward, the impact this endeavour will have on your career, as well as what the future holds for Wiwek, always in terms of new music and live performances?

“For now we will also release a soundtrack album/ep of the movie. That would be for the near future. I am currently also in a very creative space and very much enjoying that. When I am done with that and finish it all I can update on the ongoings of that as well. Besides that I will also have two upcoming releases very soon with my second project LUSU which I am very excited about.”

Remarkable in every sense of the word, we will most certainly be keeping a close eye on Wiwek and all his future endeavours within the dance scene, but for the time being, you can stay fully up to date by following him on Facebook, Instagram and Spotify!
