Frankie Knuckles mural to be unveiled in Chicago
A vibrant new mural honoring house music legend Frankie Knuckles now stands in Chicago. Artist Max Sansing titled the piece “Under One Roof,” celebrating both Knuckles and the legacy of Gherkin Records, a pioneering Chicago house label. This new public piece, located at the Uptown Branch of the Chicago Public Library, reflects the cultural diversity of the Uptown and Buena Park neighborhoods.
The event, taking place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featured Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown, Frederick Dunson of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation, and DJ Purple providing the soundtrack. Guests enjoyed activities for kids, crafts, and a celebratory atmosphere, complete with cake.
As reported by 5 Mag, the mural sits across from the former site of Gherkin Records at 916 W. Buena Avenue. The mural was funded by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and managed by the Chicago Public Art Group. This tribute aims to highlight not only the influence of Knuckles but also the pivotal role of house music in Chicago’s cultural history.
The unveiling marks another significant recognition of house music’s deep roots in the city, paying homage to one of its most important figures while bringing together the community under a shared love for music and art.
