Calvin Harris’ iconic album ‘18 Months’ turns 12
Twelve years ago this week, the electronic music landscape was about to change forever as one of the genre’s most commercially successful albums was released. Calvin Harris’s third album produced several chart-topping singles and catapulted him and the genre into superstardom.
On October 29, 2012, Calvin Harris delivered his third album, the first to be dominated by guest vocalists. Evolving from the sound of his previous two releases, the producer chose an A-list collection of singers and crafted some of the most infectious melodies and rhythms of his career. Musically, he gets some help from fellow producers Nicky Romero and Dillon Francis, but it was the A-list stars that defined the collection. Getting spectacular performances from Ne-Yo, Ellie Goulding, Rihanna, and Florence Welch, 18 Months served as an incredible collection of stadium-sized hit singles. Not only did the album make an impact on the charts in the UK and the US upon release, but more impressively it sold 25 million in singles by August of 2013.
The evolving sound and style of 18 Months came as part of Harris’ decision to not sing on his tracks anymore. As he moved away from the nu-disco style of his early work, the producer emerged at the perfect moment to crossover into the mainstream world of the music industry. Amidst the chart-topping hits and celebrity singers, Calvin Harris eventually opted to draft one track for the collection which he did sing. Yet another successful single, Feels So Close, is a great representation of the producer’s talents and ability to deliver hit tracks without outside help.
