Grigorii Palamarchuk: A Pianist and Composer Navigates the Musical Landscape from Jazz to Classical
Mr. Grigorii Palamarchuk is a pianist, jazz musician, and composer. He is the author of the show programs “Reimagined Classic” and “Classic Rhapsody.” He graduated with honors from the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music under the guidance of Igor Bril. He is also a graduate of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Faculty of Philology, and completed a music management program at the RMA Business School.
Grigorii was born in 1988 in the Ukrainian city of Mirnograd. He developed an early interest in music at the age of three and a half, when he commenced piano lessons under the tutelage of his father. When he was five, his father shot the first music videos with him that were shown on television in Ukraine. In these videos, little Grigorii is playing by the river and showing his musical talent.
When Grigorii turned 11, his family moved to Kaliningrad, Russia. He entered the music school named after R.M. Glier and attended the class of the honored teacher V.I. Shchukina. Then he entered the Rachmaninoff Music College.
After facing pressure and humiliation from the College of Music faculty, Grigorii made the decision to step away from music for a year. He ceased playing the piano and instead devoted himself to a new field: philology. This involved spending 3–6 hours a day in the library, immersing himself in the subject.
After a year of studying philology, he was fortuitously invited to perform with the renowned St. Petersburg band “Billy’s Band” at the international jazz festival “Don Cento Jazz.” Following this, he resumed playing the piano. Four months after the performance, he was appointed as the head of the Philharmonic Jazz Band. At that time, Gregory was only 19 years old.
Grigorii was an active participant in a number of Russian and international music festivals, where he has had the opportunity to work with a number of renowned jazz soloists, including Mandy Games from the USA, Pascal Von Wrablevski from Germany, and many others.
At the age of twenty-one, he went to Moscow to enroll in the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music. Mr. Bril, one of the country’s most accomplished jazz musicians, provided guidance and support as Grigorii was developing his own style of performance and arrangement.
He initiated productive partnerships with esteemed jazz ensembles and orchestras, including Cigar Hall, Trombone Show, and Valery Kiselyov’s Classical Jazz Ensemble. Grigorii went on to take a direct part in the Moscow Ragtime Band and the legendary Oleg Lundstrem Orchestra, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest continuously existing jazz orchestra!
In just his second year of study, he became a laureate of the international competition “Festos,” “Piano in Jazz.” He took part in the TV show “Big Jazz” on the TV channel “Culture”
Grigorii possesses a unique combination of musical talent and memory, which has enabled him to pursue his studies at two institutions simultaneously: the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music and the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University.
After obtaining a master’s degree from a renowned university, he commenced his professional career with a solo performance entitled “Astor Piazzolla on the Piano,” showcasing his original arrangements.Grigorii was gradually establishing a reputation as one of Moscow’s most in-demand pianists.
In 2022, the musician left Russia and chose to go to Georgia. Like many emigrants, he looked for work and found it on cruise ships. He visited 77 countries in 20 months. At this time, he created 2 new shows—”Classic Rhapsody” and “Reimagined Classic.” These projects reflected his work and let him share new improvisations with global audiences.
Grigorii is currently staying in New York. The musician will release his first solo album in the near future.
