In a recent interview with Billboard Dance, Steve Angello opened up about his solo career, the evolution of dance music, and the future of Swedish House Mafia.

Swedish House Mafia’s Evolving Music Process

When asked about the long-awaited Swedish House Mafia album, Angello revealed, “We had an album. We scrapped it and we put out singles. We are still always working on music and when we feel like ‘ok, this is good enough for us,’ we’ll put it out. There is always that in the air. As a creator, if you’re not feeling something, it’s not going to see the light of day.” This approach shows their dedication to releasing only music that truly resonates with them.

On the state of dance music, Angello shared his optimism: “I think dance music is in a great place. You have a lot of talented artists doing their thing. The walls are down between the subgenres, and you can collaborate with anybody. Any genre can be mixed into dance music. It has a bright future.”

Wellness and Sobriety on the Road

Regarding wellness, Angello reflected on his 13 years of sobriety, stating, “I’m sober for 13 years. That’s helped a lot psychologically. It’s hard when you tour. You have to catch sleep. The good thing is that I have people around me all the time. If you want to talk about something, you can. You need good people around you. Mentally, it takes a toll more than physically.”

Angello also expressed his natural connection with DJing: “DJing for me is so natural. It is the time when I express myself. For me, it’s home.”

Finally, he shared insight into the Swedish House Mafia’s hit records: “At the time when we were going to put those records out, the labels were not supporting it. It was always us testing things out and seeing the reactions of the crowd and basing our releases on that.”
