At our recent We Rave You x Breda Beats event on the city’s musical legacy, legendary Breda born DJ/Producer Hardwell opened up on social media popularity and how it affects the ways in which promoters work. “The music is less relevant right now than your following,” Hardwell says

Hosting a conference on the musical legacy of Breda City this past weekend, We Rave You x Breda Beats offered everyone in attendance with a glimpse into the rich history of the Dutch city, and how it has helped shape its own legacy within the dance scene, either that being through the talents that have emerged, the club scene and so much more. Taking part on a special panel, Breda’s very own Hardwell shared his thoughts on a wide range of subjects, with his take on social media and its popularity in this day and age, definitely standing out.

Making his thoughts on social media, and Instagram in particular heard, Hardwell opened up on how the amount of following an artist has, as well as the like they receive on their posts, have become a vital part in closing bookings with promoters and venues worldwide. A statement that has become ever so relevant in recent times, Hardwell sadly made clear that “the music is less relevant right now than your following,” with artists now having to focus on way more than just producing music, but in turn, creating a social media presence that will get them noticed.

A clear outtake on how social media has taken over the musical aspect of being a DJ/Producer in this day and age, Hardwell’s thoughts on this matter are as relevant as they could be at this very time, and with social media continuing to evolve in the most rapid of fashions, it comes to beg the question on how being popular online weighs more than the music that you actually produce, always in terms of closing bookings with promoters. Food for thought indeed, we would also like to know your own opinions on the matter in the comments section.
