Seeking governmental help, the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) have unveiled the staggering figures for 2024, with the results showing that 72 festivals in the UK have either cancelled, postponed or permanently ceased their operations this year alone.

Facing one of their most challenging years to date, the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) have announced the staggering figure of 72 festivals in the UK having to cancel, postpone or permanently cease their operations in 2024 alone. A figure that has doubled when compared to similar issues faced in 2023, has now led to the AIF declaring a crisis within the UK festival scene, as 204 events have vanished from the British calendar since 2019, with 96 of those event losses occurring during the global pandemic.

A ‘devastating period’ as described by John Rostron, the CEO of AIF, 2024 has once more unveiled the ongoing struggles faced by the UK festival industry, with the prime factors leading to this crisis being high inflation, sustained economic challenges deriving from the pandemic, as well as shifting consumer trends. Calling for government help, the AIF has “campaigned tirelessly for targeted, temporary government intervention,” and despite evidence showcasing that this would have helped save the majority of the “fallen” events in 2024, it has become apparent that the minimal support that has been provided, is no where near enough to scale this crisis.

Acting as a clear reminder on the vulnerability of the festival industry in the UK, and not only for that matter, it is now that organisers, artists and fans should get behind the AIF and their initiatives, as drastic changes have become a necessity in the bid to prevent further losses as time progresses. Seeking this unification of all sectors, you can check out the official AIF website here, with further information on their mission, everything they stand for and of course, the key ways to help achieve their goals.
