Daft Punk released their debut album 28 years ago this week
The impact and legacy of Daft Punk is nearly impossible to quantify in words. The duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo transformed not only dance music, but the industry itself, and it all began in 1997 with the release of their debut album.
Although Daft Punk is now officially a thing of the past, a retired duo whose members have moved on to other projects, the legacy and impact of their music, style, and influence still looms large in the music industry. Following their 2021 retirement announcement, several archival releases and alternate versions of tracks and albums have kept the group as relevant as ever. That legacy began in earnest in 1997 when the group shared their groundbreaking debut album Homework with the world. Officially released on January 20th of that year, it contained early hits such as Around The World and Da Funk, breaking through the era of pop acts and nu-metal.
While the group would reach even larger levels of success with their future releases, Homework set the standard for themselves and helped gain a steady audience as the duo began in earnest. Originally envisioned as a collection of singles and EPs, the producers eventually realized that they had enough music for a full-length album and thus their debut record was born. The title even refers to this collection of music and their efforts at the time as Bangalter has revealed that it was recorded cheaply and at their homes, making it feel like homework. 28 years, Daft Punk continues to impact a generation of listeners and new producers so revisit the iconic rhythms of Homework to celebrate the robots legacy.
