Todd Terry transforms Dave Beer’s debut single into a powerhouse vocal house anthem
Over 30 years ago, Dave Beer introduced Todd Terry to the UK club scene, bringing him to play at Back to Basics. At the time, Dave never imagined they would one day collaborate. Having admired Todd since first hearing Black Riot’s ‘Just Make That Move’ on West End Records, Dave now sees a full-circle moment as Todd takes his debut single and remixes it into something extraordinary.
Many clubbers, DJs, and producers recognize Back to Basics as one of house music’s most influential club nights. Running strong for 33 years, this Leeds institution has been guided by Dave since its inception. The club introduced UK audiences to legendary US DJs like Doc Martin, Derrick Carter, and François K, while also providing early opportunities for acts such as Basement Jaxx and Groove Armada. Dave’s unwavering support for emerging talent earned him deep respect within the dance music community.
Beyond hosting one of the UK’s most enduring club nights, Dave has quietly built a reputation as a dynamic DJ, a surrealist painter, and a music producer. However, despite years of experimentation, he never released his own music—until now. In 2025, Dave will finally unveil his debut album, led by a series of standout singles. The first release, ‘For The Beloved’, features the soulful vocals of Robert Owens, recorded during Robert’s stay in Leeds.
Todd Terry’s Remix: A Fresh Take on ‘For The Beloved’
When Dave approached Todd Terry for a remix, Todd eagerly accepted. Dave had championed Todd in the early days, and now the favor has come full circle. Todd, a true NYC house pioneer, revolutionized dance music by merging hip-hop with house on tracks like ‘I’ll House You’ with Jungle Brothers. His classics, including ‘Can You Party’, ‘Jumpin’’, and his remix of Everything But The Girl’s ‘Missing’, cemented his place in house music history. Yet, even after decades in the game, Todd remains as innovative as ever.
Inspired by ‘For The Beloved,’ Todd didn’t stop at just one remix—he delivered three. The ‘B2B Mix’ kicks off with spiritual elements before diving into Todd’s signature beats and a deep, groovy bassline. As soon as Robert Owens’ unmistakable voice enters, the track locks into an irresistible rhythm. The Todd Terry Remix strips things down, letting Robert’s vocals take center stage before lifting the energy to euphoric heights. Meanwhile, the Tee’s Freeze Mix caters to late-night dancefloors with a darker, deeper edge. The lyrics—“Life’s for the living / So don’t have regrets”—capture Dave Beer’s philosophy, resonating even more following recent events in his life.
In mid-2024, Dave received a cancer diagnosis. Fortunately, doctors determined it was treatable. After undergoing surgery in November, he faced complications that required intensive care and a blood transfusion. However, in true Dave Beer fashion, he fought through it, emerging with renewed focus and determination. Now, he steps into the spotlight not only as a tastemaker but as an artist in his own right, ready to claim the recognition he has long deserved.
