Beyond their legacy as musical trailblazers within the trip-hop genre, Massive Attack hopes to leave a different legacy on the environment. In recent years, the group has worked hard to limit carbon emissions from their concerts to protect the planet.

At the end of 2023, Massive Attack revealed plans for a comprehensive outdoor concert in Bristol. Titled ACT 1.5, the event was conjured to meet the recommendations of the Paris Accords and the iconic group worked hard to build a concert that would see more attendees utilize trains to arrive as well as find new ways to provide electricity and food throughout. Having taken place in August of last year, the data and final results from the group’s attempt have now been published. Compiled by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, the report reveals an incredible decrease in environmental impact as well as a carbon-negative grade, as long as the 3,898 native trees planted are counted (the group does not count them).

While the planting of trees is an incredible act for Massive Attack, the actual event itself was full of incredible figures for its limited impact on the environment. Reviewing the report, the Tundall Centre noted that the 32,000-person concert produced 81% less carbon emission thanks to the use of batteries without any diesel backup. Beyond powering the event, the team worked closely with local rail service to ensure ease of travel for attendees as well. Food was also a focal point, with the entire offerings being plant-based and all waste combined into one single dispatch that was sent to compost. It was certainly a gigantic undertaking but also a massive success (pun intended!).
