You can now control Ableton Live using Claude AI
AI has been one of the most controversial topics in the music industry for the past few years, and in what we feel is a groundbreaking development for digital music production, a user(Sid Ahuja on GitHub) has made an AbletonMCP that allows Claude AI to directly control Ableton Live. This innovation, powered by the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enables AI-assisted music composition, track arrangement, and session manipulation—all through natural language commands.
AbletonMCP allows for real-time two-way communication between Claude AI and Ableton Live. With this integration, users can:
- Create and modify tracks: AI can generate MIDI and audio tracks, adjusting them dynamically.
- Load instruments and effects: Claude can select the best sounds from Ableton’s library.
- Control playback and tempo: Users can start, stop, and manipulate Live sessions through voice or text prompts.
- Generate MIDI clips: AI can create and edit MIDI notes, assisting with melodies and chord progressions.
How It Works
The system operates via:
- Ableton Remote Script: A Python-based MIDI Remote Script that processes AI-generated commands.
- MCP Server: A socket-based server that enables real-time control of Ableton Live.
The integration requires Ableton Live 10 or newer, Python 3.8+, and additional setup via the Claude Desktop app or Cursor. Once installed, producers can issue commands like “Create a Metro Boomin-style beat” or “Add a reverb to my drums” and watch Claude AI handle the task.
As highlighted by Siddharth on his GitHub profile, here are a few example prompts you can try out with Claude and Ableton after the installation process.
“Create an 80s synthwave track” Demo
“Create a Metro Boomin style hip-hop beat”
“Create a new MIDI track with a synth bass instrument”
“Add reverb to my drums”
“Create a 4-bar MIDI clip with a simple melody”
“Get information about the current Ableton session”
“Load a 808 drum rack into the selected track”
“Add a jazz chord progression to the clip in track 1”
“Set the tempo to 120 BPM”
“Play the clip in track 2”
🎵💿Built an MCP that lets Claude talk directly to Ableton. Now you can create music with just prompts!

Here’s a demo of me creating a lush, 80s synthwave track in just two prompts. It picks the right instruments, creates melodies, and adds effects like reverb and distortion 🔊 pic.twitter.com/fsE7iqthIq
The tool is designed to work only with Ableton’s default devices and browser items at the moment. Check out the Ableton MCP and installation instructions here.
The technology is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing developments in recent times, prompting us to consider whether music production is heading in the same direction as graphic design and video creation, where AI-driven tools use prompts and voice commands. On the upside, this innovation opens up possibilities for users to create music without extensive technical knowledge of music software while still allowing room for creativity. Though the technology is in its nascent stages, it could eventually empower millions of people worldwide to produce music.
