Daft Punk smash hit ‘Get Lucky’ turns 12 years old

By the time Daft Punk delivered their final album, the group had been off the road for years and rarely made public appearances. Despite a changing music landscape, the French duo would continue to set trends with their incredible stylistic choices.

Although the true burst of electronic music entering the mainstream regularly didn’t occur until the 2010s, Daft Punk had firmly cemented their place in the industry a decade and a half earlier when they appeared on the scene with their debut album Homework. By the time Alesso, Skrillex, Armin van Buuren, and Calvin Harris were broaching the top of the charts, the French duo were several years removed from their landmark Pyramid Tour. As big room and dubstep sounds took over the cultural consciousness, the members of Daft Punk were looking backwards to craft their fourth studio album.

When Get Lucky was released, featuring the smooth vocals of Pharrell Williams and the legendary guitar rhythms of Nile Rodgers, the 70’s era influence seemed completely out of touch with the current zeitgeist. Of course, Daft Punk are no ordinary producers, and despite their lack of knowledge of the current EDM scene (they thought EDM was an artist, not a genre!), the music resonated with fans worldwide. With no tour or other promotion, Get Lucky dominated the airwaves in 2013 and reminded the world that the robots existed outside of the realm of modern culture.
