Lorde has returned with a bold new single, ‘What Was That’, her first major release since 2021. Released earlier than planned due to an overwhelming fan reaction, the track marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in her career. While the original release date was set for April 25, the single arrived a day early, catalyzed by a spontaneous public moment in New York.

Earlier this week, Lorde surprised fans with an unannounced appearance at Washington Square Park, where collaborator Dev Hynes previewed the track through a portable speaker. Despite not having the necessary permits, the gathering quickly drew a crowd, prompting police to shut down the event. Hours later, Lorde arrived and filmed part of the accompanying music video, which captures her wandering the city before breaking into an impromptu dance among fans.

Since her last album, Solar Power, Lorde had only shared scattered updates. In early 2023, she hinted at a return, and by mid-2024, previews began to surface. Production on ‘What Was That’ involved Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro, both of whom contributed heavily to the song’s textured synth-pop feel. The lyrics look back on a former relationship with raw honesty and shifting emotion, echoing the introspective tones of Melodrama.

The track’s contemplative narrative, combined with its breezy rhythm and stripped-down production, signals a shift in Lorde’s direction-less escapism, more confrontation. The result is a stirring reminder of her ability to evolve while staying deeply personal.
