Providing us with a wider glimpse into his genius mind, Matt Cross opens up on his latest project, ‘PHANTASM,’ the influence of horror in his sound, and so much more.

Paving his own way within the dance scene in the most immersive of manners, Matt Cross is the true embodiment of an act that has dedicated his life into mastering every single aspect of his craft to the utmost of perfection. Formerly known as Achilles, the US-based DJ and record producer has truly set his sights on nothing less than global dominance, whilst each of his endeavours thus far speak volumes on the undeniable musical prowess that he possesses. Embracing a brand new project in the form of ‘PHANTASM,’ Cross has opted for a darker and more haunting style of play, as the distinct terror house sound of his new alias makes for a transition that can only further solidify the versatile nature of this artist to watch. Having said this, we could not be any more thrilled to be joined by the man himself, as he discusses main inspirations and influences, the origin of his style of play, embarking on this new darker journey with ‘PHANTASM,’ achieving career milestones and so much more.

Hello and thank you for joining us! Could you provide us with an insight on the main inspirations/influences that led to your chosen career pathway in music?

“Happy to be back on We Rave You under my new alias! I grew up with a music oriented family and never thought I would dabble in production until my good friend Shöckface introduced me to it. I was a big hardcore kid and a big fan of electronic music. Everything just clicked and 10 years later I’m still here!”

Renowned for your unique approach towards music production, we would like to know the origin of your style of play, and how your sound has evolved over time?

“Originally under my previous alias, Achilles, I was more tech house oriented and had some success over time but it lacked the branding. As a massive horror fanatic, I knew I wanted to incorporate that into my next project: PHANTASM which originated from one of my favorite horror movies as a kid. My sound has evolved but always keeps the eerie reese’s, signature FX hits and little noticeable sounds. I continue to improve and build on that sound to give my fan-base the ear candy they recognize.”

With versatility a key aspect in the dance scene, could you talk us through your preferred genre(s), your ability to cater for each, as well as the impact this feature has had on your career thus far?

“I definitely cater to my core genre, House, more than all. This year I have dabbled more into Dubstep, Techno, DnB, etc. I feel having diversity in my music will allow more opportunities in different areas to reach more fans. I feel my fan-base definitely appreciates the diversity and has made a positive impact thus far.”

Embracing the fear and dread of the unknown to fuel your latest project, we would like to know the journey of ‘PHANTASM,’ the key factors behind this transition, as well as any adversities faced along the way?

“As said previously, PHANTASM is one of my favorite horror movies as a child. It originally was going to be a side project but eventually took over as my main. It was difficult to transition to be honest, it took almost 6 months to prepare everything for a launch that would make an impact. The main adversities faced was starting over. I changed my branding, sound, everything. Rebuilding an entire fan-base as well as maintaining loyal fans was a process but makes me so happy to reach new fans and make new friends in the music industry.”

Channeling the darkest of elements with your ‘PHANTASM’ project, could you talk us through the influence of horror in your sound, and how this unique feature has become an integral aspect of your productions?

“I try to keep my signature horror sounds to a minimum but noticeable. I use a lot of reese basses, dark FX hits, my signature “uh” vocal in many of my songs and more. I try to build each song as their own and giving it a unique approach each time.”

Announced as the new A&R for the well-renowned 3000 Bass record label, we would like to know the significance behind this position, and how it will impact your career going forward?

“I knew I always wanted to dabble into another side of the music industry and A&R was the most appealing for me. I knew if I ever tried to attempt that path, it had to feel like home. Alan & 3000 Bass have been significant members in my success, given my project a home and support me continuously. It was a no brainer and I am honored to be in that position to elevate the next wave of producers.”

With 2025 now in full flow, could you provide us with any hints or tips on what the future holds for Matt Cross, always in terms of new music, upcoming collaborations and live performances?

“So much is being planned. I wish I could leak it all but I can definitely say there is loads of new music finished and being worked on, at least 10 ready to go since January. A lot of collaborations being worked on are secretive for the element of surprise but I do have some heaters on the way with Fantom Freq, Rhiannon Roze and UNEEDA to name a few. My first show this year will be June 7th making my Los Angeles debut under this project and so many more shows are being planned. Keep your eyes open and clear your schedules for October time frame. Lots of horror to come and I am so excited to share with you all.”

Remarkable in every sense of the word, we will be keeping a close eye on Cross and all the future endeavours under the PHANTASM alias that he has in store, but for the time being, you can stay fully up to date by following the man of the moment on Facebook, Instagram and Spotify!
