Minimal House Pioneer iO Mulen Loses Home to Russian Bombing
Ukrainian artist Alexander, better known as iO Mulen—a prominent figure in the minimal and microhouse scene—recently took to Instagram to share a heartbreaking image of his destroyed home, a casualty of the ongoing Russian bombardment of Ukraine.
With a career spanning over two decades, iO Mulen has been a pillar in the underground electronic music community. The complete loss of what he spent years building is not just a personal tragedy, but a significant blow to the global music scene. He is also the co-founder of Mulen Records, a respected label in the non-commercial Minimal House space. The Russia–Ukraine war has displaced countless citizens, forcing many to flee their homeland.
Another leading Ukrainian artist, Miss Monique, has already left the country due to persistent threats to her safety. Amid these harrowing circumstances, many Ukrainian musicians have turned to music as a powerful form of resistance and solidarity, using their art to emphasize national identity in the face of conflict. Artists like Andriy Zholob and the experimental folk group DakhaBrakha have created emotionally resonant works that inspire both civilians and soldiers.
Several musicians have joined the Armed Forces or volunteered their time to support troops through fundraising and frontline performances. In response to the crisis, numerous labels have released benefit compilations, with proceeds directed toward organizations supporting Ukrainian artists. Benefit shows continue to be held around the world to raise both awareness and vital funds for Ukraine.
Here is a list of Ukrainian artists and labels you can support during these challenging times.
