Splice acquires Spitfire Audio for $50M
Splice, the popular sample subscription platform, has just acquired Spitfire Audio, including their LABS division, for $50Mn.
Splice has been hitting record-breaking numbers with millions of samples being downloaded every day. Their venture into AI has been quite successful so far as well, thanks to their AI sample finder. It would be interesting to see how this acquisition of one of the world’s most prestigious virtual instruments, curated by Spitfire, turns out. Spitfire Audio co-founder Paul Thomson and Splice CEO Kakul Srivastava met up in Air Studios last week to take the deal forward and discuss their plans for the future.
“First of all, I’m not going anywhere. I’m really excited about the future and about what we’re going to be able to build together,” says Thomson. “My two passions have always been, since I first started writing music commercially, creating sounds for me to use in my own music, and the actual composition work itself. So, I’m going to enjoy doing more composition work and getting fulfilment from that creativity, but also, I love making sample libraries and I love making musical tools that people can use to express their creativity. They’re both equally important to me. We’re still going to be providing perpetual licence products.”
“We have such a shared passion for the creators we serve, the values match,” adds Srivastava. “One of the things that I’ve been learning about our customers is they want more creative control, and they want Splice and the sounds that we have deeper into their workflow. We’ve been thinking about all the different ways to do that. When I think about Spitfire [Audio], the tools you’ve built, the user experience, the creative control you’ve given users, making that accessible to the Splice community will be very powerful. Most important is what we can build together. In the next six to nine months, we’re going to see some really cool new stuff coming out.
Splice’s motive is to utilize Spitfire’s sound engine in building the foundation of its AI-powered discovery engine. Splice is a profitable company with more than $100 million in annual revenue. Backed by big investors such as Goldman Sachs, Splice is keen to invest deeply into futuristic technologies that can change the way we make music. Spitfire Audio, the London-based company, has been in the game longer than Splice and is one of the top sample library and instrument makers in the field of film scoring, orchestral arrangements, and more.
Spitfire Audio will continue to operate under its own name, brand, and distinct product experience. Splice and Spitfire will be working on future products that combine the best of both platforms. No changes in existing models for users have been announced yet. Spitfire also shared that they are working on bringing Spitfire’s virtual instruments to Splice soon.
