Home Featured Remembering Avicii: Top 10 performances

Today marks 7 years since the music industry lost a true legend, Avicii. On this day, we’re looking back at ten incredible performances that he gave to the scene.

1. Ushuaïa Ibiza 2016

It wouldn’t be a list like this if you don’t include what would be the final ever Avicii performance, in 2018 at Ibiza’s famous club Ushuaïa. With a season of performances at the club from 12 July up to 30 August, his closing party would also mark his retirement from touring, going out on his own terms. Thankfully, fans can now watch the full recording of this set on Netflix.

2. Tomorrowland 2011

Some say this is where it all began, and its easy to see why. His debut Tomorrowland performance saw him hit the mainstage and play ‘Levels’ at the iconic festival for the first time during the daytime, a far cry from what his performances at the festival in future years would become. With tracks such as ‘Bromance,’ ‘Sunshine,’ ‘Silhouettes‘ and more, this is an era to look fondly back on.

3. Ultra Miami 2012

Embedded in Ultra history forever with the world’s media talking nonstop about it at the time, this is where Avicii would cross dance and pop in a unique way by bringing no other than pop royalty herself Madonna onto the stage to not only play his remix of ‘Girl Gone Wild‘ but also for her to introduce him to the stage. It wasn’t just that moment of the set that made it legendary though, with this being the set where he got to headline the festival’s mainstage for the first time, too.

4. Coachella 2012

Another huge moment in the producer’s career was headlining a stage at Coachella in 2012, bringing his iconic mask stage design to the crowds. Debuting a lot of visuals and mixes that fans could expect to hear on his upcoming tour at the time, this set also helped create the spark that set off an explosion of electronic artists performing at the festival, which has now becoming firmly rooted in the culture of its lineups.

5. Rock In Rio Lisboa 2016

Another set from what would be his final year of touring, this one is notable for its huge crowd size, 47,000 people to be exact. Featuring many iconic remixes, edits and original tracks, it felt as though the entire festival came together to witness the producer at his finest.

6. Ultra Miami 2013

Ultra Miami is always a place where artists love to showcase new projects they’d been working on, and this was no exception for Avicii although no one. could have predicted the fallout from it, and what was to come. With boos coming from people in the crowd who didn’t understand this new musical direction he was going in, it only further proved him to be a pioneer for the scene, and after the boos came cheers of those who loved it.

7. Creamfields 2012

Although footage of this set is scarce (and the footage that exists is grainy and shaky, reminiscent of the times), it has to be noted on this list for being his first UK festival. Forming a strong bond with the UK where he rose to fame very prominently in the country, the set was so highly anticipated that it became the pick for one of BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix episodes (you can listen to that here). This was also where he premiered ‘Stay With You.’

8. T in the Park 2015

What makes this particular set stand out is the pure energy that the crowd gave. With people even calling it one of the best crowds that the producer has ever had at a show, its easy to see why.

9. Festival Mawazine 2015

Although the Rock in Rio crowd was huge, this was on another level. It’s said that an estimated 200,000+ attended this show on a Monday night to see one of his only performances in the Moroccan region, making it just that much more special.

10. Ultra Miami 2016

Sadly the very last time he would play at Ultra Miami, this was shortly before he announced his retirement, and lucky fans also got to hear the premiere of a handful of new tracks at the time, including the now iconic ‘Without You,’ ‘Lord‘ and ‘Forever Yours‘ to name a few.
