Dance music is on the rise according to new report
Dance music is not just a nostalgic genre, it is a truly emerging musical movement
A report shows that dance music is not just a nostalgic feeling from the past, but a cultural revolution that is embracing cities. The report, published by the New York Times, also reveals that there are several shifts within the genre, which are bringing with them the preferences of Gen Z.
There’s no doubt that from underground clubs to massive LED-lit arenas, dance music is in a state of flux. This applies to both soundscapes and sound system implementations. Perhaps a good example of this is the new Signal club in Brooklyn, which opened in early May this year and prioritizes soundscapes and community first and foremost. Interestingly, it has only one large dance floor and no VIP section, which brings people even closer together. Of course, one would be fair to think that this is not the main problem in today’s clubs, as people are constantly filming, for example, and this is the part that gets the most criticism. The New York Times’ report openly states that dance music is only now really breaking out, and it will only get stronger in the future.
But the report also shows that the rise of dance music is not where we dance. It is also about how and why we do it. As just one exclusive example, two Manhattan clubs, COQODAQ and Jean’s, have already adopted a style that some have labeled “clubstaurant”. Think of it as a merging of nightly raves with elegant dining, which may sound strange, but it’s also what’s happening in dance music culture; there is a need for that from fans. The music scene has also become a lot more democratic over the years. Although it is sad to say that follower numbers now tend to determine success, but much smaller artists have the opportunity to break out without any label influence. SoundCloud, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms are opening new doors for this, bringing a new generation of producers to the fore.
