In May, Japan’s electronic music scene was set ablaze with two unforgettable nights as UK bass powerhouses Sota and Darkzy took over Circus Osaka and Circus Tokyo, hosted by the collective CruCast. Both shows delivered high-octane performances packed with intense basslines, genre-bending singles, and a 360 set experience that had local fans dancing from start to finish.

Sota and Darkzy are bringing drum and bass to global stages in Japan and beyond, and their recent shows at Circus Osaka and Circus Tokyo, hosted by CruCast, were a testament to their rising influence and energy. Both nights were packed with high-energy performances, delivering a 360 experience that had local fans leaving in awe for more.

Nottingham-born Darkzy has become a major force in the UK bassline and dubstep scenes, and his Japan shows perfectly showcased why. Since bursting onto the scene in 2016 and delivering epic singles such as “Party All The Time” and “Get Mad,” Darkzy has continued to push the boundaries of drum and bass music. His sets in Japan leaned into the heavier side, reflecting his recent artistic evolution and his role as founder of the Grottingham label. Darkzy’s performances kept the crowd locked in with massive drops, gritty basslines, and a seamless mix of bass sub-genres that demonstrated his mastery and forward-thinking signatures.

Now Sota took the stage, he immediately controlled the crowd with his distinctive blend of drum and bass, shaped by early influences in rock and metal. Sota’s rise has been meteoric—he was named BBC Radio 1’s Future Star of Dance 2025, sold out major venues across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and continues to grow a global following. His third release, “Do You Feel It Now,” on CruCast marks a new chapter in his career, and his set reflected that evolution beautifully. The performance balanced emotional depth and raw energy, with tracks like “Wait For Me” and “Pray For Me” resonating deeply with the audience while also delivering the dancefloor heat.

CruCast’s hosting created an atmosphere that brought the crowd into the heart of the music, making the experience truly unforgettable for all attendees. These shows were not just typical events, but celebrations of the expanding global reach of drum and bass in Japan. Ultimately, Sota and Darkzy’s performances in Japan proved that drum and bass is a powerful, evolving global movement.
