Few artists in the history of music have the reputation and combative drive that has underlined the career of Eminem. In his latest battle, he goes after one of the world’s largest tech companies for unauthorized use of his works.

Throughout his career, Eminem has never been one to back down from a fight. Whether it be fellow rappers, producers, magazines, or even his own traits, he has confronted these scenarios head-on and with lyrical mastery. Not all battles can simply be fought in the booth, and Eminem is now taking his latest battle to court as he alleges that Meta has used his music without proper permission. The recent increase in artificial intelligence has seen a rise in cases where artists fight for their rights, and copyright scholars express alarm over the new technologies that impede these rights.

The suit, filed on May 30th, came from Eminem’s publishing company, Eight Mile Style, and alleges that Meta distributed his music without permission via its Reels Remix and Original Audio features. In the suit, the rapper is seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 per track, a figure that could amount to a $109 million payout. Also in the court filing, Eight Mile Style acknowledges that Meta attempted to obtain licenses via Audiam, Inc., but they were not granted. Certain Eminem songs have been removed from the platform, while several covers and instrumental versions remain searchable, which is another complaint on behalf of the rapper.

Stay tuned in the coming months as this story unfolds.
