Paul Oakenfold celebrates 35 years of Perfecto Records

Home Editorials Paul Oakenfold celebrates 35 years of Perfecto Records

“We started off as a small dance label and has dance music grew, we grew with it. We’re still an indie label, with over 10 million records sold,” said Paul Oakenfold at his 35 years of Perfecto Records screening in London.

As Paul Oakenfold celebrates 35 years of Perfecto Records, a documentary championing its success from inception to now was born. Attending an exclusive screening of the documentary in London, “How Dance Music Changed The World” detailed its growth. From signing the likes of David Guetta and Carl Cox to BT and Tiësto, many of the legends of today started with this label.

Standout moments, I’d say – the first Perfecto University tour. Planet Perfecto. Perfecto Allstars. Reach Up. The radio show, which is now 15 million listeners worldwide. In terms of events, Mount Everest is up there. Stonehenge too. I’d say Perfecto remixes like Massive Attack and U2 are highlights. We started off as a small dance label and has dance music grew, we grew with it. We’re still an indie label, with over 10 million records sold.” – Paul Oakenfold to We Rave You on some of the biggest moments from the past 35 years.

Taking over Karma Sanctum Hotel in Soho, London, the screening attracted some of the biggest industry professionals to all reminisce over a massive part of important electronic music industry, as well as look to the future of Perfecto, something we also asked Paul about.

Bloody hell! Not sure I’ll be around then. No, I mean, dance music global. It’s everywhere. In TV ads, in movies, in commercials. So, it’s a scene we’ve seen develop and grow and Perfecto will grow with the scene and provide a home for any artist around the world.”

Whilst, for us, it would be hard to nail down a specific track that truly encapsulates the spirit of Perfecto Records and these last 35 years, Paul Oakenfold already had one track ready to go:

I’d have to go with ‘Not Over Yet’ with Grace, as the title sums it up – It’s not over yet! That was one of our biggest hits. ‘Bullet In A Gun’ was obviously massive too. It’s so hard to pick one but yeah, I think it would be Not Over Yet with Grace.”

Ending the night with a DJ set from previous Perfecto office manager and now DJ Nancy Noise, it was a more than suitable way to encapsulate not only the history of the label but electronic music as a whole, and how far it has grown and changed since then.
