Home Music Phunque brings all the feels on the ‘Ready For Love’ EP [Review]

With summer officially here, music fans will need a soundtrack for their vacations, parties, and just chilling on the beach. The Berlin-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Kute Juergens, known for his project Phunque, returns with a fresh EP titled Ready for Love. Channeling the shimmering grooves of early ’80s funk and blending them with a modern edge, this release is tailor-made for beach days, rooftop parties, and everything in between. Let’s take a look at the tracks on the EP.

1. Ready For Love

Kicking off the 5-song collection is the original Ready For Love production. Clocking in at just over five minutes, it is full of fresh grooves and a bit of funk that feels both nostalgic and immediate. The deep male voice sings the refrain of ‘I’m ready for love’ as the smooth bass line carries the energy forward. Phunque is not afraid to mix things up, delivering a short horn section and stripping down the production at one point, feeling like a live band bringing down the energy just to burst through again after giving the crowd a chance to catch its breath.

2. Ready For Love (Summer Mix)

The term ‘Summer Mix’ is very appropriate here. Stripping back some of the more groove-centric elements of the original, Phunque approaches this mix like a Friday afternoon, getting ready for a weekend of fun and sun. The percussion opens the track, and he brings in a thin layer of synths before the vocal hits. It’s vacation time, and this track doesn’t work harder than it needs to, yet it’s essential for the party. Whether en route to the party or just beginning the pre-game, this track will set the tone for any summer activity.

3. Ready For Love (90s Mix)

For the third track on the EP, Phunque turns the clock back a few decades, looking towards the iconic synths and production of the ’90s for inspiration. The format is similar to the (Summer Mix), but Phunque isn’t lazy about differentiating the two productions. During the last decade of the 20th century, house music grew rapidly while maintaining a minimalist, driving spirit throughout. That energy is captured here as the synth and bass do the decade proud.

4. Ready For Love (Andy Bach Nu Disco Mix)

The fourth track on the Ready For Love EP comes from fellow German producer Andy Bach. Adding a bit of disco flair to the production, Bach gives the track a new feel, something to come down from the night with. The groove and melody are all there, but this is not a peak hour production. As the night grows late and the party is slowing down, this will serve perfectly as the soundtrack to keep the vibe just right. It is funky and smooth, but never overpowering or forced.

5. Ready For Love (Radio Edit)

This version gets right to the point. Clocking in at under three minutes, Phunque has put together just the most important elements of his latest masterpiece. The vocal is as infectious as ever, and the shorter run time allows it to take even more of a spotlight. Ready For Love is wonderful in its versatility, serving as a must-listen bit of ear candy that can be played at any time.
