Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invests €600 million in AI military defense company
Recent years have certainly highlighted the financial struggles of Spotify and the challenges artists face in earning a living in the digital age. This debate is likely to flare up again, as the company’s CEO, Daniel Ek, has now made a major investment in a new venture.
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has long been a controversial figure of sorts. As the streaming platform hits incredible new highs for the number of subscribers, the artists have long bemoaned some of the payment practices, as the company’s leaders have continued to grow wealthy. Now the CEO is making a second investment in the German AI military defense company Helsing. The €600 million investment was made via Ek’s investment company, Prima Materia, and is the second time he has supported the venture.
Back in 2021, EK faced backlash when he initially invested €100 million into Helsing, but he is now doubling down. The Spotify CEO supported the new financial influx of cash by saying, “The world is being tested in more ways than ever before. That has sped up the timeline. There’s an enormous realisation that it’s really now AI, mass and autonomy that is driving the new battlefield. We can’t understate the implications of that for this conflict [in Ukraine] or really any conflict going forward.” This will certainly draw more ire from fans and artists, but Ek appears unwavering in his decision.
