UK’s largest music retailer closes down all stores with immediate effect
Play Music Today, also known as PMT, one of the UK’s largest retailers, has closed down all of its stores in the UK, effective immediately.
PMT was founded in 1991 by Simon Gilson and Terry Hope and operated 12 stores across England and Wales alongside PMT Online. PMT entered administration on 11 June 2025 after failing to secure an investor. Rick Harrison & Howard Smith from Interpath have been appointed as join administrators.
The company faced industry-wide struggles, including shrinking profit margins, rising fixed costs, tighter credit terms, and cash flow problems. The revenue was continuously falling, with the last calendar year reporting a major dip to £43m in 2024. While the problems continue to persist, Gear4music has acquired £2.4 million worth of stock and Intangible assets (websites, trademarks, commercial data), for just £1.2 million. Gear4music highlighted that they have no plans to use the PMT brand name.
Rick Harrison from Interpath called the challenges “too difficult to overcome” despite the board’s best efforts. All employees have been made redundant, and administrators are assisting with Redundancy Payments Service claims.
