Decades ago, two married couples joined forces to form ABBA, an electro-pop group that wrote some of the biggest hits of the era. Despite essentially disbanding in 1982, the group's music has lived on, with its greatest hits collection ABBA Gold becoming a best seller in 1999, and the group's music reworked for the stage in Mamma Mia! Although the group recently reformed for the new album, Voyage, data from Spotify reveals that Gen Z, individuals born between 1997 and 2012, now make up 50% of ABBA's listeners and help push one single over 1 billion streams.

As the music industry has shifted from units sold to streams on digital platforms, the metric for success has also evolved. Recently, ABBA surpassed a key marker for any major hit in the modern era.

Initially released in 1979, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! was released to support the upcoming ABBA tour and was initially placed on the group’s second greatest hits collection. Having joined the elite 1 billion stream club, Spotify said, “More than four decades after its release, the disco anthem is experiencing a powerful resurgence, thanks in large part to Gen Z listeners on Spotify, who are discovering ABBA’s music in massive numbers.” The iconic disco anthem is further proving the timelessness of music and the power to connect across generations.
