The Velvet Sundown is gaining some serious attention on Spotify. The band has over 325,000 monthly listeners and their music blends dreamy guitars, vintage synths and smooth, laid-back vocals. But something about the group doesn’t add up. Furthermore, there are no live performances, no interviews, no real-world appearances, and no official social media accounts.

The Velvet Sundown : AI or Human?

According to their Spotify bio, they are a four-member band comprising of Gabe Farrow, Lennie West, Milo Rains, and Orion “Rio” Del Mar. The descriptions feel carefully curated but there’s no evidence these people exist outside Spotify. Listeners have noticed, and questions are starting to be asked. A thread on Reddit pointed out that this band might not be real, but an AI generated one.

Adding more fuel to the fire, Deezer’s own audio detection tools reportedly flagged The Velvet Sundown’s tracks as possibly AI-generated. That does not confirm anything, but it definitely raises eyebrows. The timing and silence around the group make the situation more unusual. Despite the mystery, The Velvet Sundown is showing up across Spotify. They feature in several well-followed playlists like Unexpected Finds and Solitude Collective. In one Vietnam-era-themed playlist, they appear 26 times(???!!!) That’s more than any other artist on that list despite them having nothing to do with Vietnam.

They distribute their music through DistroKid. It allows for fast uploads and easy access to major streaming services. Anyone can use it, including AI developers. No one has officially claimed the band as an AI project. However, many signs point in that direction. The combination of generic music, almost zero public presence and rapid playlist growth fits a growing pattern seen across streaming platforms.

Even if AI built The Velvet Sundown, it hasn’t hurt their success. People are listening. Streams are climbing. They are gaining reach with no marketing. This raises bigger questions about how music is being discovered in 2025. Do fans care who made it, or are playlist placements and moody songs enough? The Velvet Sundown might be an experiment. They might be a background music brand. Or maybe they are just a low-key group that doesn’t care about social media. Regardless, they’ve tapped into something that’s working.

In a world where AI is writing songs, making art, and even building fictional bands, The Velvet Sundown seems somewhat like an enigma. Whether or not they are “real” may not matter much anymore. The numbers speak for themselves. And for now, they keep growing.
