Calvin Harris reflects on social media’s evolution and his role outside the influencer era: Watch
While continuing to dominate global charts and festival stages, Calvin Harris remains grounded about his place in today’s social media-driven industry. The Scottish producer, whose recent single ‘Blessings’ extended his run of chart-topping success, recently spoke with Danny Howard on BBC Radio 1, sharing thoughts on TikTok, online culture, and how his relationship with the internet has changed over time.
Currently holding a high-profile residency at Ushuaïa Ibiza, Calvin Harris stands among electronic music’s most influential names. Over the past two decades, he has built a catalog of anthems that include global hits like ‘One Kiss’, ‘Summer’, and ‘Feel So Close’. However, despite his ongoing popularity, he openly distances himself from the influencer-style demands many younger artists now embrace.
Reflecting on his early years, Harris recalled his hands-on approach during the Myspace era. “When I first started, 22 years old or whatever, I was going on support tours… I used to do video blogs on Myspace,” he said. He described how, by 2012, he pivoted away from online content to focus strictly on the music, joking that once he “started wearing black t-shirts” like Steve Angello, he found more success by “not ruining it with my personality.”
Although Harris respects the current wave of content-driven music discovery, he sees himself as part of a different generation. “It’s good… tunes can break through by kids that are exciting,” he added. Still, he makes it clear he won’t be joining the trend: “I’m a 41 year old man… I’m not going to start making haha videos.”
Calvin Harris continues to let his music speak for itself – onstage in Ibiza, on streaming platforms, and without the help of viral dances.
